The Columbus Moving Picture Show: One month to go

The clock is ticking; one month to go before The Columbus Moving Picture Show opens at the Renaissance Columbus Downtown Hotel.

Special rates are being offered for CMPS attendees, but reservations must be made by May 3. To reserve a room, call the hotel at 1-614-228-5050 and ask for the Columbus Moving Picture Show guest room rate.

The hotel, at 50 N. 3rd St., is in the heart of downtown Columbus, with many restaurants within walking distance.

The CMPS film schedule has been finalized, and it’s a doozy. Among the highlights is the 1934 pre-Code musical-murder mystery, “Murder at the Vanities,” the campy Ed Wood feature, “Glen or Glenda,” the 1940 action-packed, 12-chapter Republic Pictures serial, “Adventures of Red Ryder,” the traditional Saturday morning animation festival and a selection of Our Gang, Laurel & Hardy and Charley Chase shorts.

Other titles include Bela Lugosi in “The Invisible Ghost,” the Western noir “Ramrod” with Joel McCrea and Veronica Lake, “Love Thy Neighbor” with Jack Benny and Fred Allen, several silent films with piano accompaniment and a tribute to Columbus-area entertainer-musician Ted Lewis, including a screening of his short, “Is Everybody Happy?” and the feature-length Abbott and Costello comedy, “Hold That Ghost,” which also spotlights Lewis.

And on Wednesday night, prior to the official opening of CMPS, the Wexner Center will be screening two pre-Code Fox features, “For Me and My Gal” (1932) at 7 p.m. and “The Warrior’s Husband” (1933) at 8:30 p.m. Admission is $5 when you mention the Columbus Moving Picture Show at the door.

Also on hand will be several noted authors and film historians such as Scott Eyman and Richard Barrios.
I will be there introducing and watching movies, checking out the dealers’ room or simply roaming around. If you see me, introduce yourself and say hi. I always enjoy meeting fellow film buffs.

I hope to see you starting on May 26 for The Columbus Moving Picture Show.
